How to Sign Up for Medicare
The Part A Hospital Insurance will be free of charge for those who have paid into Social Security during employment or have spouses who have done so. Part B and Part D are elective since both require a monthly premium. Failure to elect Medicare Part B and Part D when first eligible can lead to lifetime premium surcharges and coverage gaps. See Medicare Eligibility for more information.
Medicare Eligibility
When turning 65 you have an opportunity to enroll in Medicare as long as you or your spouse have worked for at least 10 years in covered employment and you are a citizen or permanent resident for at least 5 years. You are also eligible for Medicare if you have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or if you are receiving disability benefits from Social Security for 24 months.
